Gary's Interview Went Well

Gary is a funny kid. He's got this very juvenile confidence. Like a kid who's going to dig a hole to China. I wonder if it is a defense against feeling inadequate thing. I'm not sure. I do find myself often somewhere between impressed and stupified by it.

Anyway, he had an interview to teach martial arts at this place that he could just barely get to after school if the buses run perfectly on schedule. He feels the interview went really well and is "99% confident" that he will get a second interview.

For myself, I confess I would rather he not get the job. I doubt that he will really be able to get there and back on the bus. Commuting 40 minutes to work is one thing, driving 40 minutes to pick someone up from work, and then another 40 back is another. But Roland and I have decided not to worry about it. We will just see what happens.

We got Andrew from the airport. We took the girlfriend along (anyone want to nominate a pseudonym for her?). I talked to her a little bit about her plans. As in, I asked her to tell me about them and she did. I did not express any judgment, other than to congratulate her on getting in. She really has thought about it. On one hand I think there is very little chance that she would be going to this city if Andrew wasn't there. On the other hand, I am confident that she is doing what she wants to do.

A friend of hers is going to the same school, and that makes her feel safer. They will either share a college-sponsored apartment or, if her older sister goes along like she says she wants to, they may find somewhere else to live.

In any case, we had a pleasant afternoon and I am looking forward to a quiet evening.

  1. Sounds like a very nice afternoon.

I'll nominate Zelia as a name, since it is at the opposite end of the alphabet from your "family" names and I think it is really cool.

  2. I think she should have a matching "A" name. Allison, Amy, Alyssa, OH OH OH ANDREA!!!! hahaha I'll bet that would make it hard to type...Andrew and Andrea. Nope, it types out just fine. Andrea it is! :)

I love that Gary has all of that confidence. I just hope that it isn't masking deeper issues...

  4. On a note of pure sentiment I vote for Alice. Hell, I'm so tired, stressed, grief stricken, sick (i now have the flu), and exhausted, I vote for the whole name. It's cute and catchy, let's call the girl Sweet Alice! Told you I was in a sad state, the flu was the last straw! As per usual in this situation, I'm not sleeping over three hours at a stretch! Like I said, Sweet Alice, SA for short!

  6. Regarding Gary's over-confidence, my Slugger kind of has that too. I'm not sure if it's the same thing, though. Slugger's "confidence" is actually anything but confidence. In one area he's unrealistic/unaware and that makes him seem confident. For example, tests. That kid thinks he aces every single test he takes. Then he's completely shocked when he gets a D or something. You would think he would say "that test was hard" or "I wasn't really sure about some of the questions." But no. He ALWAYS thinks he aced them. Another thing that, ironically, makes him seem confident is his lack of self-esteem. He brags. He brags incessently. And if you compliment him ("you did a really good job on X, Slugger), he has to repeat that fact over and over and over ad nauseum. It took me a long time to realize that his bragging is actually begging for praise. It's subtle, but there's a hint of a question in his brags.

I don't know if that's the same as Gary at all. But I know that's how Slugger is. And it took me months and months to figure that all out.
