Women-only post

I mean it...I'm going to talk about periods and menopause.

Actually I want to ask a question of women who have been there, done that. It's multiple choice.

Three periods in the last six weeks means:
a. welcome to perimenopause
b. stuff happens, especially if you've been really, really sick
c. you should call the doctor
d. you should call only if _____

Notes: I'm almost 46, mom had a hysterectomy at40, so no family pattern. No pain or moodiness (usual for me). So far 3rd & current period is really just spotting, but the first two days are often/usually like that.

  1. I am glad you posted. I look forward to your replies.

I am 41 soon to be 42. My mother went through meno in her early 40s. She got her period at 9 yo.

I have suspected for a few months I have something going on. Hot flashes, irregular periods, etc. Even with a tubal ligation, I got frightended a few months back when I skipped a few periods. Pregnancy test was negative.

I have not called the doctor. (Should I?)

Cannot comment on your question - as i am likely in the same space as you.

So I will be back to see other answers!

My partner's going through the small-period-every-few-weeks thing too and so far it hasn't alarmed her enough to make her see a doctor. If she keeps up the mood swings that go with it, though, she's going to be under pressure from me to schedule an appointment sooner.

We both believe it to be perimenopause but haven't gotten an official diagnosis. She goes in next month to get everything checked out.

B is true, but I'd vote A and then suggest you talk to your doctor about it in the next little while. I doubt it's an emergency, but it wouldn't hurt to have some professional advice.

  3. I agree with motherissues. It sounds like perimenopause as many women I've known have experienced it. (I've got weird endometriosis and hysterectomy experiences in my background, so my personal experiences won't be relevant.) I've been told that vaginal bleeding is never an emergency unless you're bleeding enough to fill a maxipad an hour. But I'd say it's probably good to make a regular appt. to go see your OB/GYN on a non-emergency basis just to get a professional (and personal to you) opinion. Until then, I say give thanks for the lack of pain or moodiness! Woohoo!

  4. I would also suggest you just make an appointment - I wouldn't be overally concerned but it's always best to just have things checked out. They can run a blood panel on you to check your horomone levels and possibly an ultrasound.

  5. I would bet it is the meds you have been on lately for the illness- meds really mess with cycles. argh!

  6. I vote a. b. and c.

Weird stuff does happen, our bodies change as we age, and talking to the do about it is a great idea.

  7. Thanks everyone. I'm really not in the mood to see the doctor right now. Busy, yada, yada...

I'll set up an appointment for sometime in the future.

  8. I'm betting it is the meds you have had to take. That said, I have no real reason other than the fact that I am 50 and have none of the signs other people write about! LOL My mother keeps asking me *when* (picture that in heavy black bold italic letters, maybe even caps!) I am going to finally go thru menopause. How the heck do I know? Why do I care? LOL She had a hysterectomy at 36 so I too have no family history.

  9. No need to rush I'd say but still make an appointment to make sure and to rule out the "bad" and "scary" specially if it happens again w/in another 6 week period.

I'm perimenopausal (diagnosed) and I'm only 38...my hot flashes come and go (every few months it seems) and I have periods of "ugly" moods (anything from "gee..I'm annoyed" to "get the F out of my way or I WILL kill you!"LOL!) yet my periods (for the first time ever in my life) have been fairly regular (go figure!) - but if I were to get erratic bleeding I'd get it checked ....it could be anything from
stuff happens, to a polyps, fibroids, benign or malignant tumors, hormonal imbalances, menopause, etc. so a doc visit to just be sure is not a bad idea.
